In part of the Shema prayer (Deuteronomy 6) it says to love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength. God wants everything. Total commitment. Total devotion. I often look at my life and see a huge gap between what I want to be as a follower of Jesus and what I am today. I can say that I am totally devoted to Jesus but then a challenge comes along in life and it derails me and I feel like I have taken steps backwards in my walk with Jesus.
One of our students moms is mentally challenged. When we have conversations with her it is apparent that she struggles with life. My heart breaks as I think about what it must be like to suffer from mental illness in our neighborhood. No medicines or Oprah episodes to help. You are pretty much on your own. We hope that somehow our ministry can help her but up until now we don’t know how specifically.
Loving God with everything means walking beside this family. Praying for them. Assisting when appropriate. Keeping her dignity in tact is always foremost. Her children (2 of whom are in our school) will probably need some help as they grow. God may we be totally committed to you and your purpose as we live together with our neighbors. Amen.
